Free Gingival Gaft

Dr. Rana Zogby also performs another affordable type of gum graft called “free gingival graft” to increase attached gum around teeth to improve teeth longevity and health.

She uses a special packing and cover for the donor site that has switched this procedure from the reputation of being “very painful” to the current reputation in her practice as being a “very comfortable procedure”.

In both procedures Dr. Zogby prides herself in being able to always use the patient’s own tissue to regenerate another area which has a much better long term success.

What is the cause of Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the tissue that surrounds the teeth recede, exposing the root surface. Over time, an exposed root surface can cause sensitivity, the gum in that area will have some inflammation and, if it progresses further and is left untreated, may lead to tooth loss.

To avoid this and repair the damages caused by receding gums, a gum graft may be required.

Fairview Mall Dental Centre offers two types of gum grafts. Dr. Rana Zogby will choose the type suitable for your specific situation. The two graft types include:

Connective tissue graft: Connective gingival grafts require the use of tissue from the roof of your mouth. It is the choice used when we wish to cover receded gums that are in esthetic areas of the mouth.

A small area is raised on the roof of the mouth, and a layer of tissue underneath the surface, called subepithelial connective tissue, is harvested and then placed at the prepared site of recession.

The gums and graft are then stitched into place. The site on the roof of the mouth is then stitched back. Our patients have an amazing recovery after this procedure with minimal discomfort.

Free gingival grafts: Free gingival grafts require the use of tissues from the roof of your mouth.

However, instead of making an incision and removing required tissues from under the surface, the surface tissue is removed directly from the roof of the mouth and then attached to the gum area being treated.

This method is effective for people who have thinner gums and is best used in non-esthetic areas where root coverage is not the goal.

This treatment will decrease the likelihood of further recession. Increasing the amount of attached gum tissue, or keratinized tissue, around the tooth is the objective.

You will be given coverage for your roof of mouth to wear for 7 days to keep the exposed area covered. Our patients have reported minimal discomfort after this procedure and they heal in an exceptional speed.
